AI SEO is the work of making your website easy for AI-powered search to find, understand, trust and quote. It covers Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity and assistants such as Claude and Gemini. It does not replace SEO. The same foundations decide whether your pages can be used at all, and a few extra habits decide whether they are the ones that get cited.
- AI search engines retrieve from search indexes, so a page that is not crawlable and indexed cannot be cited.
- Google says there are no additional requirements or special optimizations for AI Overviews and AI Mode beyond normal SEO.
- For ChatGPT search, allow OAI-SearchBot. Blocking GPTBot (training) is a separate decision.
- Pages that answer a question directly, with specific facts and sources, are the easiest to quote.
- Measure with Search Console plus a fixed set of prompts checked over time. Treat AI citations as directional, not as rankings.
How AI search chooses its sources
AI answers are assembled from retrieved pages, not invented from nothing. Google's documentation says both AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a "query fan-out" technique, issuing several related searches across subtopics and data sources while building a response, which lets them show a wider set of supporting links than a classic results page. ChatGPT search and Perplexity work on the same principle with their own crawlers and indexes.
The practical consequence: you are rarely cited for one big keyword. You are cited for the specific sub-question your page answers better than anyone else, such as the cost range, the comparison table or the definition, so each page should answer its questions clearly.
What Google says you need (and what you don't)
Google's guidance on AI features and your website is unusually direct:
- There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special optimizations are necessary.
- A page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Search with a snippet. That is the bar.
- No special schema and no new AI text files are needed for Google's AI features.
- You control what is shown with the usual nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex controls.
- Traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode is included in Search Console under the Web search type.
Google's recommended practices are the familiar ones: allow crawling, including through your CDN or hosting firewall, link to important pages internally, keep key content in text, support it with good images and video, and make structured data match what is visible on the page.
ChatGPT and Perplexity: let the right crawlers in
OpenAI documents three agents that matter here:
- OAI-SearchBot finds pages for ChatGPT's search features. If robots.txt blocks it, your pages will not appear in ChatGPT search answers.
- GPTBot collects content that may be used to train OpenAI's models. Blocking it is a training decision and does not remove you from ChatGPT search.
- ChatGPT-User fetches a page when a person asks ChatGPT to. It is user initiated, so robots.txt rules may not apply.
Perplexity runs its own crawler, PerplexityBot, which robots.txt also controls. Check your firewall or CDN bot settings too: some block AI crawlers by default, and an allowed crawler that is blocked upstream is still blocked.
A practical AI SEO checklist
- Crawl access. robots.txt allows Googlebot, Bingbot and the AI search crawlers you want, and nothing upstream blocks them.
- Indexing. Important pages are indexed, with self-referencing canonicals and no accidental noindex. Confirm in Search Console.
- Answer first. Open each page with a direct, self-contained answer of 40 to 60 words, then give the detail.
- Question-shaped headings. Use the questions buyers actually ask, in their words. Search for "AI SEO", not only "GEO".
- Specific, sourced facts. Numbers, ranges, steps and comparisons, with links to primary sources for anything consequential.
- Consistent entity facts. The same company name, description and offer everywhere: your site, your profiles and your structured data.
- Structured data that matches the page. Organization, product, article and FAQ markup only where the content is visible.
- Text, not pictures of text. Key facts must be readable without running scripts or reading images.
- Internal links. Every important page is reachable through descriptive links, not only through navigation.
- Freshness where it matters. Date and update pages whose facts change, such as prices, tools and regulations.
How to measure AI visibility
Start with what is measurable. Search Console includes AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic in its Web data, so impressions and clicks for your target queries still tell the main story. Analytics shows referral visits from AI assistants such as chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai. On top of that, keep a fixed list of real buyer questions and check monthly whether each assistant names you, how it describes you and which pages it cites. Record the date, market and exact prompt. Answers vary between runs, so treat this as a trend, not a ranking.
What not to do
- Don't write fake FAQs or questions nobody asks just to add markup.
- Don't hide text for crawlers or show AI systems different content from people.
- Don't buy mentions or links to manufacture authority.
- Don't expect a file to do the work. llms.txt is harmless and some tools read it, but Google says no new machine-readable files are needed for its AI features.
Frequently asked questions
Is AI SEO different from SEO?
It builds on SEO rather than replacing it. AI search engines retrieve from indexes, so crawlability, indexing and relevance still decide whether you can appear. AI SEO adds a focus on direct answers, specific facts, consistent entity information and being quotable for the sub-questions behind a query.
Does llms.txt help with Google AI Overviews?
Google says no new machine-readable or AI text files are needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. An llms.txt file is harmless and some AI tools may read it, but it is not a ranking or citation requirement.
How long does AI SEO take to work?
There is no fixed timeline and no guarantee. New or changed pages first need to be crawled and indexed, which can take days to weeks, and citations depend on how well a page answers the question compared with other sources and how much the source is trusted.
